When I was younger, I remember saying we don’t need a day to celebrate only women. I think I thought if we want to be equal we shouldn’t need to be celebrated separately. I understand things differently now. I understand that to varying degrees each of us has had to work hard to truly value and celebrate what makes us who we are. So a day to remind us to continue to do this, as well as work toward improvements, is a fine idea 🖤 Maybe we need a day for men too, as a mother of a young man who lifts me up always, I’ll celebrate that day too. Today though, is for me, my amazing friends, my sisters, cousins, aunts, grandmothers, my mom and all the women I don’t even know but most importantly for my beautiful, strong, thoughtful, feisty, daughter who shows me everyday how much of how we regard ourselves can change from one generation to the next and how much can stay the same. I have always loved this teaching. Now more than ever. From what I understand, it is not accurate to say it’s from the Talmud. I have added some text below, that I hope gives its proper reference. I might have some friends here who know better, please feel free to let me know. • Via Jessica Price “So first off, the text it's referencing is from Pirkei Avot, which is part of the Mishnah, a collection of Jewish legal discussions, stories, etc. The Talmud is commentary on the Mishnah, essentially. Pirkei Avot is a collection of wisdom from the rabbis whose debates and stories form the Mishnah, and it's where a lot of the famous quotes about Jewish ethical principles come from. The language of the Mishnah/Talmud is highly stylized, and dense/allusive/metaphorical, so unless you've spent a lot of time studying it, and know the conventions, it can be hard to pull out what it's actually saying. The quote in the meme is actually from this book: Wisdom of the Jewish Sages: A Modern Reading of Pirke Avot by Rabbi Rami Shapiro. My magnolias are 5 months old! While everyone was baking bread during quarantine, I got a few tattoos. Drawn on by the incredible @anka.tattoo 👑, freehand. You all know how much I love freehand drawing, but permanent on your skin is different, not seeing the exact finished art beforehand is different. Trust is a beautiful thing.
